Growing up in rural Sussex provided David with his love of the natural world. Observing and studying the creatures and plants around him established the basis of the knowledge and understanding he has acquired. Study of botany and zoology at A level widened his knowledge, after which he worked for a number of years in a medical laboratory. Photography wound its way throughout these experiences resulting in a special eye and interest in detail, precision and recording subjects often at extreme close up levels. He gained Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) in nature photography in 1974.
These skills led him to present illustrated talks on photography, natural history and other subjects to a wide range of societies and organisations for over 50 years. Many of his photographs have been published. Commissions for wildlife surveys of several large nature reserves in Sussex on behalf of the County Council also followed.
In later working life he was employed as a crime scene investigator/photographer with Sussex police.
After taking early retirement, David won a national garden design competition, the resulting show garden being built at the Hampton Court International Flower Show. This success led to designing and creating many gardens for clients before moving to live in the West Country.
Alongside these activities, his artistic talents prevailed, and earlier forays into model building (think 1950’s Meccano, Airfix kits etc!) have resulted in more recently building from scratch, scale models of a Thames barge and also of a windmill (Argos Hill mill near Mayfield in East Sussex) for which he is a patron of the restoration society. The model is now displayed at the mill itself. Over 500 hours of detailed work which can be found recorded in this online book.
